The objects of the Institution is to diffuse among all classes a
taste for Art generally, and more especially for contemporary Art.
Towards carrying out tbis object, Annual Spring Exhibitions of
PaintiDgs, Sculpture, Drawings, and other Works of Art, have been
regularly held since the year 1861. Exhibitions of works in Black
and White have been held in Autumn since 1880. Financially and
otherwise the Institute has been a success. Exhibition opens
generally on first Tuesday in February, and closes last Monday
in April. ,

Founded on a Bequest of the late Steven Mitchell, Esq. Mi*.
Mitchell died in April, 1874, and the bequest was accepted by the
Town Council iu July of the same year.
The Library was opened November 1, 1S77, and is open daily from
9 30 a.m. till 10 p.m. uninterruptedly. It contains 45,000 volumes.
The books are not permitted to be taken away, but may be read in
the library, which has been conveniently furnished for this
purpose. There is a magazine room, where may he seen more
than 180 of the principal weekly, monthly, and quarterly serials, in-
cluding a number of American, German, and French period-
icals. The admission is free, and no introduction or guarantee is
required.
The number of readers is large, frequently exceeding the accom-
modation provided. In 1880 the average number of volumes issued
daily was 1,269 ; in 1881, 1,315, not including the large use made of
the periodicals in the magazine room. The total issue during 1881
was 403,713; and from commencement to 31st Mav, 1682, was
1,548,448.
The Library is administered by a Committee of the Town Council.
