LILLIESLEAF, BOWDEN AND MIDHOLM.
-LilLLlESLEAF is a village and parish— the former
10 miles from Galashiels, the same distance from Jed-
burgh, 8 from Hawick, 6 from Selkirk, and 3 from
the New Belses station on the North British railway.
The village is destitute of interest as respects manu-
factures, particular trade, or objects of curiosity ; but a
few of the inhabitants are employed in the weaving of
hosiery for the manufacturers of Hawick. There is a
subscription library in the village. The parish, which
is four miles in length by nearly three in breadth, is
intersected by the Ale water. The lands are under
good tillage, and the district has a very pleasing ap-
pearance,
Bowden village is two miles and a half from Mel-
rose, standing in a low situation, through which a ri-
vulet passes to the Tweed. The parish comprises a
portion of the Eildon hills, from whence the laud gently
declines in well cultivated and enclosed fields. The
vestiges of a Roman military road, with circular sta-
tions or encampments, may be traced in this district;
and a ruin at Hollydean, at an early period a strong
fortification, and the ancient residence of the now
noble family of Roxburgh. Within the parish, besides
Bowden, is the small village of Midholm, or Midlam,
pleasingly situated on a rising ground, two miles from
Lilliesleaf.
