ftlAYBOLE AND THE VILLAGE OF CULROY.
,AYBOLE i< a small, neat market and post town.
the capital of it's parish, in the district of Carrick ; 87
miles s. w. from Edinburgh, 53 n. by e. from Poit-
patrick, 44 s s vv. from Glasgow, 25 N.'from Ballantrae,
22s by w. from Kilmarnock, 12 n. by e, from Girvan,
and between 8 and 9 s. from Ayr. It lies in a charm-
ing part of theconntiy, on the face of a gentle eminence
with a southern exposure, and surrounded by lovely
scenery, formed of parks, highly cultivated, and hill
and dale, with a sea view of the ■ busy Frith of Clyde '
opening on the west. Mayhole vvas created ?■ tree
burgh of barony in November, 1516, on a grant to
Gilbei t Earl of Cassilis, the patron, and to the provost
and prebendaries of the collegiate church of Mayhole,
to which belonged the lands whereon the town stands.
In October, 1639, an act, ordaining the head court of
Carrick to be held at Mayhole, was passed by the Lords
of the Articles. The streets of the town are narrow,
and contain no eminently fine places or public build-
ings; seveial of the dwellings, now inhabited by
weavers, bear a venerable aspect, and doubtless were,
at a distant period, the domiciles of more dignified
personages. The mansion-house or castle of the Cas-
silis family isthe finest surviving specimen of the win-
ter seats formerly existing in Mayhole: it is a stately
well-built structure, standing in centre of the town,
and is said to have b< en the residence of the repudiated
Counte-s of Cas-ilis. It is now occupied by Thomas
Dykes. Esq. factor to the Marquess of Ail«a. The
building now used as the town hall belonged to the
Kennedys of Blairqnhau. The principal business car-
ried on here is weaving for the Glasgow houses, in
which branch there are many local agents employed,
aud many families busily occupied.
The collegiate church has been for some time in
ruins, and the ground appropriated as a private ceme-
tery for the Cassilis family. The parish church, 6
Quoad Sacra, a Free church, United Presbyterian
church and Episcopal church, and a Roman Catholic
chapel, are the places of worship. The parochial
school dispense* instruction to about one hundred and
seventy boys and gb'is, who are tanuht all the useful,
and some of the polite branches of literature, there are
besides several other schools public and private.
Yeatly and quarterly meetings of the 'Carrick fanners*
society are held in the town-hall ; the annual one is on
the first Thursday of August, and the quaiterly on the
first Thursday in the months of February, May and
November; the quarterly in August merges in the
yearly assemblage. A 'Knox' club was instituted in
1824, for the purpose of commemorating the zealous
exenions of that extraordinary man. In the vicinity
are many interesting objects, among which is the cele-
brated ruin called Crossreguel (noticed in the sketch
of Kirkoswald), and Kilheiuie castle, which was io a
similar state of dilapidation has of late years undergone
repairs, and is now the residence of Mr. William Ken-
nedy, it once belonged to a branch of the Cassilis
family, who were for a long period hereditary bailies
of Carrick. Ancient coins have been fiequ' ntly found
in considerable numbers. In the neighbourhood are
two remarkably fine springs of water, popularly named
' St. CuthbertV and ' Well trees ;' the latter is said to
yield ten thousand imperial gallons per hour. The
market is held on Thuisday; the following are the
annual fairs — Beltan fair, the third Thursday of April,
and Halloa fair, the third Thursday of October.
Culroy is a small village, in the parish of Mayhole,
three miles and a half from that town, on the road to
Ayr, from which it is five miles and a half distant. A
manufactory for woollen goods is established in this
village.
