Slater's
table institutions. Two circulating libraries afford
literary amusement to domestic readers; and a com-
pany of comedians generally attend during the summer;
while the Brisbane Academy (an endowed establish-
ment)), together with the Parochial and Free Church
school, afford the inhabitants amplt- means of educat-
ing their families. Few districts possess more roman-
tic scenery : the old c sties of Skelmorlay, Knock, and
Fairley, with Brisbane House, ornament the parish.
it was on the plain of Largs that the celebrated battle
was fought between the Scots, under King Alexander
the third, and the Danes under Haco, Kine of Not way,
in their la>t invasion of this country, in 1263. In the
glen near Kelburn is a cascade, which lias a fall of
fiftv feet perpendicular— and various other natural
beauties, arrest the attention and excite the admiration
of tlie traveller. An aisle in the chutch, built by Sir
Robert Montgomery of Skelmorlev more than two cen-
tuiies back (the sculpture and painting of which
would be no discredit to a more advanced age), has
underneath a vault, in which lies the bodv of Sir
Robert, enclosed in a leaden coffin, bearing a latin in-
scription, signifying '1 was dead refote my-elf, I antici-
pated mv proper burial alone of all mortals, following
the example of Caesar ' ; allu'line it is, said to Charles
the fifth, who, it may be remembered, had his funeral
obsequies pet formed previous to his death. The ex
plrtnaiinn usually given of this strange affair is, that
Sir Robert was a very pious man, and was in the habit

of making nocturnal descents into the vaults to per-
form his devotions, thus burying himself alive. Sir
James Montgomery of Skelmorlay, a subsequ-nt rep-
resentative of this family, wis a distinguished leader
among the Scotch Presbyterians, at the lime of the
revolution, b.nt is reported to have afterwards made
himself conspicuous by entering in a conspiracy with
the ultra Jacobites, for the restoration of King James.
The population of the town and pirisli in 1851, was,
3,710, since that time there has been a very marked
increase.
Fairlie, or Fairley, is a small village in the parish
of, and about two and a half miles south from Largs.
In the vicinity is Kelburn Castle, the picturesque seat
and family mansion of the Earl of Gla-gow; likewise
the ancient square tower of Fairlie Castle, formerly a
sent of a family of that name. The extensive planta-
tions around Kelburn Castle are highly ornamental to
the general landscape. There are, besides, some very
elegant villas, which harmonize with and adorn the
prevalent features of the parish ; and the marine scen-
ery is truly beautiful and enlivening. The are two
places of worship in Fairlie, one an Established
Church, the other a Free Church, and in connexion
with each there is an excellent school. Considerable
business is done here in boat building, being noed
for the beauty of build and excellent sailing qualities of
the yachts launched from the various yards.
