with much greater ease, for it acts simultaneously as a
rudder and propeller. This is the one power I should
like you to see ; the small space it occupies, the ease
with which it would pass through the loose floating ice,
are some of the recommendations of this propeller,
which I should like to see fitted upon your steamer.'
Mr. Dick, speaking of the paddles.continues :— ' But the
nature of its acting is so very different from the blades
of a screw working entirely under water, in a line with
the wake of the vessel, that I wish you had had
this application of the stern screw with you in your
perilous voyage.' Although now too late for him to
think of adopting the screw for this voyage, Captain
Ross was nevertheless anxious to see the model, and
requested that it might be forwarded by „his coaling
ship, the Johns, which was to start on a certain day
from the Clyde, and join him at Lochryan. Mr. Dick
thereupon resolved to go with it himself, and accord-
ingly proceeded to Greenock, on reaching this place he
found the Johns had left shortly before, and was by
that time as far as Rothesay Bay. He however, secured
a steamer, about to start for Rothesay, in the hope of
still overtaking the ship, and on his passage he dis-
covered her beating down the Frith. On landing at
Rothesav, he proceeded with all speed in a carriage to
the south end of the island of Bute, where he saw her
opposite Largs ; he believed he might yet get on board,
bat was unsuccessful. After this pursuit Mr. Dick
returned to Irvine, and despatched the model over-
land to Lochryan, accompanied with a letter to
Captain Ross, instructing him how to mai.age it in
making experiments. The model reached its destina-
tion in good time, but still another untoward circum-
stance was to prevent the Captain making any use of it.
This was the mutiny and desertion of the Johns crew,
while on the eve of starting, occasioned by the delay,
of the steamer, and the nature of the seamen's engage-
ments, which so disconcerted the plans of the gallant
Captain, that anything like experimenting with a model
could not be looked for. With its precious contents the
box was, therefore, returned to Irvine, unopened. On
the 12th November, 1829, this model was next sent by
Mr. M'Cririck, with a full description of it, to the
Royal Scottish Society of Arts, Edinburgh. And early
in 1830, it was taken by Mr. Dick to London, where,
accompanied by Mr. Andrew Smith, engineer, Princess-
street, Leicester-square, he placed the same model in
the hands of Mr. Aiken, the secretary of the Society of
Arts, Adelphi, and afterwards furnished (for use of
said society) a full description of it in writing. The
committee on mechanics of this society, as well as the
Edinburgh Society, received it with disfavour, stating
in their report, 'that it did not possess sufficient
novelty to require th«ir attention.' Mr. Aiken
having intimated the adierse nature of the London
Society of Arts report, Mr. Dick, on the 16th February,
1831, wrote to Mr. Andrew Smith, asking the favour of
his procuring the model aud its appliances from the
society and re-transmitting them to Irvine, which he
did in March, 1831. The model and propeller have
ever since been sacredly preserved, fitted up exactly as
they then were, by Messrs. M'Cririck and Dick, aud of
the identity of the whole there is a great amount of
evidence.
Irvine stands within two miles of the far-famed
seat of Eglinton, the field of the tournament of 1839,
to which the noble earl permits the greatest freedom
of access. The market is held on Monday, and the
fairs on the first Wednesday in Jannaiy, the first Tues-
day in May, and the third Wednesday in August.
