GIRVAN, &c.
glgrgtjtrr.
the late Sir H. D. Hamilton, then the sole proprietor.
Steam packets between Glasgow, Ayr, at.d Stranraer,
/call off Girvan, and laud or embark passengers and
Igoods by means of light boats. Large quantities of
I grain, of various kinds, are annually exported hence,
"chiefly to Liverpool and Glasgow. The trade in coal
land lime is important — the mines of the former and the
formed Protestants. The Episcopalian Church, which
has recently been erected here, is a neat structure of
Gothic architecture, the interior of which is beauti-
fully decorated ; it also has a very commanding pulpit-
it was erected at a cost of eleven hundred pounds. To
the parochial school a valuable donation was made by
the late Mrs. Crawford, of Ardmillan, who left the
quarries of the latter being numerous in the neighbour- 1 interest of £1,000. for ever to the teachers, for the
hood, but the principal business of the town consists in
the manufacture of a variety of cotton and other goods,
for the Glasgow and Paisley markets, which affords
employment to the bulk of the inhabitants. The govern-
ment of the town is vested in two baillies and twelve
common councilmen — four of the latter being chosen
annually, upon the retirement or otherwise of the like
number on the 12th of October ; the Duchess de Coig-
ney, or her representative, is superior of the borough.
A police station is now in erection here ; it is contem-
plated to cost £450.
The places of worship are, two churches of the
Establishment, two Free Churches of Scotland, and
pthers for Reformed and United Presbyterians and Re-
POST OFFICE, Isabella Muir, Post Mistress. — Letters from all parts (except the places hereafter
mentioned) arrive every morning at ten minutes past seven, and are despatched thereto every evening at
twenty minutes past ten.
Letters from Stranraer, Newton-Stewart, and Ballantrae, arrive every evening at a quarter before
ten, and are despatched thereto every morning at ten minutes betore eight.
Money Orders granted and paid here from nine until six.
educatiou of forty children, subject only to the deduc-
tion of two guineas, to be distributed in small prizes
amongst the pupils. The same munificent lady left also
the interest of £1,000. of which £12. are given to the
precentor of the church for the instruction often of the
children in sacred music, and the balance to be divided
among poor householders not receiving parish relief.
Here is also a charity school, supported by various do-
nations and subscriptions from the gentry and others
residing in the town and neighbourhood. A market,
chiefly for grain, is held on Monday; and the fairs are
on the last Mondays in the months of April and Octo-
ber, for stock, hiring servants, and general business.
