GIRVAN AND NEIGHBQURHOOL
iIRVniV is a parish, in the district of Carrick — the
tow,,, a burgh of barony, i^ 99 miles w.s.w. of Edin-
burgh, 56 s.s.w. of Glasgow, 31 n.n.w. of Portpatrick,
uniformly nestle almost inconceivable numbers of solan
geese, puffins and gaunet*, which flutter about, and
produce an incessant deafening noise. On a inng fer-
tile like distance n.n.e. of Stranraer, 21 s. by w. of race or shoulder of the craig, at the elevation of 200
Ayr, 13 n. by e. of Ballantrae, 12 s.s.w. of Mavbole,
and 6 s.w. of Dailly, situated on the left bank of the
Garvan or Girvan, near to its influx with the sea,
and at a point exactly opposite the islet called AiKa
Craig. This rock, which is fifteen miles distant, lises
out of the Frith of Clyde, to the height of a thousand
feet. It is two miles in circumference, and the top,
which is conical, is covered with a luxuriant crop ol
heath, grass, and other plants, which feed great num-
bers of goat arid rabbits. In one place the netiles form
•in impenetrable forest, six feet in height, and all the
other plants likewise attain a proportionable gigantic
size, all around, on the precipitous sides of the rock,
380
feet from the base, stand a deserted square tower, or
castellated house, still very perfect as a ruin. Higher
up issue two sparkling and beautiful springs of water,
one of which forms a small marshy plain, covered with
various plants, amongst others the hydroeatile vulgaris,
of extraordinary magnitude. The lock belongs to the
Marquess of Ailsa, who draw* from it a yearly rental of
aboui £i0, which is paid by the feathers of the fowls
ami the rabbit skins. Naturalists and boianists would
rind a visit of value, in increasing their knowledge of
the vegetable world.
The harbour of Girvan, now convenient for shipp-
ing, underwent great improvement at the expense of
