land about a mile from the village are the ruins of old

BEITH AND NEIGHBOURHOOD.
JlSeITH is a market and post town, in the parish of was a place of some considerable trade, it is still noted
that name, district of Cunningham ; 62 miles w. by s. ! for its manufacture of linen thread, of which a large
ot Edinburgh, \% s. w. of Glasgow, 11 s. s. w. of j quantity is made here by the Messrs. Crawford, ^both
Paisley, 5 n. by e. of Dairy, and 12 n. by e. of Saltcoats.
It is situated near the confines of Renfrewshiie, on an
eminence commanding a fine and extensive view of
the beautifully diversified country around, of which the
Loch ot Kilbiruie, at the distance of about a mile,
iforms a charming feature. The town, which contains
many excellent houses, is gas-lighted, but irregularly
built, it is of modern date, comprising at the commence-
Iment of the last century only a few humble habitations.
I its neighbourhood is now the residence of many re-
spectable families j and until within these few years

for honie and export trade. The manufacture of silk
goods too, was formerly extensive, hut ibis has been
almost entirely superseded by that of cotton and wool-
en, in which the majority of the inhabitants are now
employed by the manufacturers of Paisley and Glasgow.
The principal branches are silk printing and dyeing, in
addition to those already mentioned ; (tor which there
is a respectable establishment at Roe Bank, the most
extensive in Scotland) lime burning, and the making
ot ropes and twine. Three banking houses are estab-
lished in the town— they are branches respectively from
