TRANENT.
HADDINGTONSHIRE .
I is chiefly level, under the best state of cultivation, and well enclosed •
and planted. The village is situated in the northern part of the
parish, at the distance of two miles and a half north of Tranent,
and consists of one spacious street, with a cross in the centre. The
I Parish church stands a mile and a half to the south-west, and
. Onniston Hall one mile south of the village. One mile further, on
the summit of an ancient eminence called Dodridge Law, are traced
■ of a Danish camp. Fairs are held here on the first Tuesday in
, July, and fourth Tuesday in October. Population of the parish ih
1871, 911.
nearly four miles west from the former town and three east from
the latter. The district abounds in coal, and several pits are
wrought at Penston, which is the principal village in the parish,
and chiefly inhabited by colliers. George Heriot, the founder of the
hospital at Eihnburgh, is said to have been a uativo of this parish,
and Dr. Robinson was its clergyman, while engaged in writing the
" History of Scotland." From the proximity of the hamlet of Glads-
muirtothe scene of the battle of Prestonpans, that conflict was
called, by the Jacobite party, *' the battle of Gladsmuir." The popu-
lation of the parish in 1871 was 1,863.
The parish of Okmiston lies in the western part of the county; it
