ATHELSTANEFORD AND DREM.
AtHELSTANEFORD parish lies on the north-east boundary ot
Haddington, and is separated oflk±he north by Dirleton, from the
mouth of the Forth; the small village lies within 5^^; miles s.e.
from North Berwick, 5 s.e. from Aberlady, and 3 n.e. from Hadding-
ton. Drem, ^% miles distant, is a station on the North British
Line. It contains a neat and modern church, a parochial school,
and a brewery. The parish possesses considerable interest from
the circumstance of having as ministers snccessively, in the early
part of the last century, two men of eminent poetical genius— Blair,
author of " The Grave,' and Home, author of " Douglas," to whose
memory the inhabitants, assisted by the euljscriptions of others,
have erected a handsome monument in the centre of the village*
The manse occupied by the first mentioned stood opposite the pre-
sent modern manse, near the west end of the churchyard. The
site is now comprised in the minister's garden, where an applo tree
is pointed out as having stood close to the window of the poet's
study. On the author of *' Douglas" leaving his pastoral charge,
which he did from disgust at the proceediugs instituted against hinj
by the presbytery and kirk in general, for the pubhcatiou of so
secular a work, he built and retired to an elegant mansion in tbo
neighbourhood, still exhibited as a pattern of his taste. Drem is a
village in this parish. Population of the parish in 1371, 844.
