WITS TSE PARISHES OF CAair^LIS, aUTHRIE, KINNELL, AND KIRKDEN.
. RIOCKHEIM is a modern village, in the p£i,ri3h of Kirkden, six
miles from At-broath, its post town, situate on the north bitnk of
the Lunan, and neav the line of the Dundee, Arbroath, and Forfar
section of the Caledonian tlailwiiy. It owes its origin to Mv.
Andeison, who laid out the ground on a regular plan, and feued it
into small lots, in order to encourage the settlepient of weavers, &c.,
and by far the greater proportion of the inhabitants are employed
in the â– weaving of linen cluth, and also at the neighbouring quarries.
Altogether the situation of this place is peculiarly eligible for the
seat of manufactures, being nearly equi-digtant U"om WO§t Qi the
towns in the county, and in the immediate vicinity of a railway. In
1835 upwards of £700 was collected by public hubscription.and the pro-
coods applied to the erection of a handsome chapel, in connection
with the Established Church. There are several good schools in the
village 3.nd its vicinity, in which are taught the ordinary branches
of education. Tt also contains a Free Church, and an Independent
Chapel. There is no municipal government, th^ hitlierto exemplary
conduct and contented habits of the inhabitauts rendering such
dQsoription of superintendence unnecessary, but there is a resident
police officer. Population returned with the parish.
Guthrie parish is divided into two parts, lying nearly six nJiles
asunder, the nearest portion being about one-and-a-half miles from
Friockheim. It is a juuciion on the Dundee, ^I'hroath, and Forfar
section of the Caledonian Railway, and about six miles north-west
from Arbroath, its post town. The land slopes from the hill of
Guthrie to the south ani Bouth-east, a p;irt only being arable. Prior
to the reformation this parish had a Coiiegiate Church, with a pro- 1
vost and three prebendaries. The patronage of the parish belongs j
to the family of Guthrie, one of whom was slain at the battle of |
Flodden. There is a Board school in the paris]!. The entire parish
contains 8,823 acres, and in 1871 possessed a population of 404.
KiNNELL parish, one mile from Friockheim, lies on the north
side of the Lunan, and the church stands on t|ie bank of thL- river, (
at the distance of six miles north-west from Avbroath , its post town, I
and about four miles west from Inyerkeilgr. The parish ^xtepfla
about four miles in length, by three in breadth, embraces an ace^ of
l),577 statute acres, and is separated from the sea by Lnnan parishj
it is hounded on the north by the parishes of Farnetl and Maryton,
on the east by those of Craig, Lunan and Inverkeilor, on the south'
by the latter, and on the west by those of Kirkden, Guthrie, and
Abevlemno. The surface of this district is mostly flat, and in a
t^ood state of caUiv;i,tion; and there are some plantations in a
thriving condition. Within the parish are several tumuli; and tra-r
dition pptnta out the spot where a battle was fought between the
rival claus of Lindsay i^nd Ogilvie, in the year 1443. Population ia
1871, 766.
KjEKDEN is a parish between six and seven miles long and two
bvoad, oompdsing au area of 4,999 statute acres, bonuded on the
north by Reacobie and Guthrie, on the sonth hy Carmylie, on tha
east by ivinnell and Inverkeilor, and by Dunnichen on the west, and
is watered by the Lunan and the Vinnv, one of its t:ibutaries. A
small patch of Dunnichen parish lies in the western division o|
Kirkden, which latter ig tolerably fertile, and tha lands well en-
closed and planted- In this district are some remains of antiquity,
including an obeliskilJearing some rude cliaracters, the meaning of
which cannot now be deciphered. The village of Friockheim is in
this parish. Populatioq of the parish in 1871, 1,U23, of which nnm-.
her 1,129 were returned for Friockheim
Caumvlie is a parish six miles in length by three in freadth,
and bounded by parts of eight parishes, viz: Panbri^e, Monikie,
Guthrie, Dunnichen, Kirkden, Inverkeilor. St.Vigeans and Arbirlot.
The village of Carmylie is{\bout five mjies s. from Friockheim. The
parish is hilly, and contains much land that is unproductive; bnlj
there are considerable quarries, from whicli good pavement stones
are obtained, and exported in great quantities. The small rivey
I'liiqtt runs through the whole l^ng^h of the parish, which containg
