CLACKMANNAN,
J HE capital of the county and parish of that name, though uot
now entitled to that rank from either its size, population or com-
mercial importance, was at one period a town of some consequence ;
but since the improvement of Alloa, and the superior facilities for
comraeice possessed by that place, it has sunk into comparative
insignificance. It is 32 miles n.w. from Edinburgh, and two from
Alloa, pleasantly situated on an eminence gently rising to the
height of nearlv two hundred feet above the level of the Forth.
The surrounding scenery is very dehghtful, and is viewed to great
advantage from Clackmannan Tower, which occupies a command-
ing site a little west of the town. Tradition states that this tower
was built by King Robert Bruce, close to which he had his palace,
twelve feet high. The principal trade of Clackmannan is that derived
from the coal mines, which supply employment and humble com-
petence to many of the industrious classes; there is also an
extensive fire brick works close to the railway station, and at
Kilbagie, a short distance from the town, a works established for
the making of pulp from Esparto grass, and which now also manu-
factures paper. A large ffoolleu factory, employing about two
hundred hands, has just been erected near the river Devon by
Messrs. Paton. of Alloa. Tun and vat building is also carried on
here. The soil of the parish in the carse is considered the richest
arable in the shire, and under the best state of cultivation. There
are two ports, one at Powside and the other at Kennetpans, where
not a vestige of which latter now remains. The tower is eighty | coals are extensively shipped. ^Thc places of worship are the parish
