ALVA AND TILLICOULTRY.
XlLVA is a parish and thi-iving village and a station on the Alva
branch of the Stirling and Dunfermline section of the North British
Railway ; the village is three miles from Alloa, two west from Tilli- !
coultry, and five west from Dollar, charmingly situated at the foot [
of the Ochils, whence issues a stream that turns several mills, and
forms, in its course through tho romantic and interesting glen of |
Alva, three beautiful cataracts. The largest of the faUs issues from '
an aperture in the rock above and tumbles from a height of forty i
feet in one unbroken mass into a naturally-formed basin below. !
An excellent pathway has recently been formed through the glen, !
which tourists now visit from all quarters. This parish belougs to
Stirlingshire, although locally detatched from that county, and
surrounded on all sides by Clackmannan. It aftords excellent
pasture, is well cultivated, and the hills abound with valuable ores,
such as silver, copper, iron and lead. Sir John Erskiue, of Alva,
about tho year 1715, assisted by some miners from Leadhills, dis-
covered a very rich vein of silver, in a romaiatic glen, about midway
between Alva House and the village. The precious metal made its
appearance in small threads, which, upon being followed, led to a
very rich mass of ore ; some of it was so rich that fourteen ounces
of ore yielded twelve ounces of silver. So easily was the deposit of
treasure reached, that not more than £iiO sterling had been expended
on it when the prize was found ; and during a space of Uttle more
than throe months it is said that ore was o))tained from which
Sir John drew from ^40,000 to X'50,000. After this mass was ex-
hausted, the ore became so scarce as not to repay the expense
of working, and hence the enterprise was abandoned. The district
also abounds with coal, which ig wrought to a great extent.
TliG manufacture of woollen goods, consisting of fancy plaids,
shawls, tartans, &c., is carried on in the village and its neighbour-
hood very extensively, and numerous hands find busy employment
in the different mills: these, v.itli their tall chimneys, exhibit an
interesting contrast with the lofty Ochils and the sun-ounding
plain. Alva far surpasses some of the Scottish burghs for 'its
merranvile activity and imiiortaucc. In the village is a branch of
the Union Bank of Scotland, and the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Tiie House of Alva, the residence of James Johnston, Esq., stands
on an eminence, projecting from tho base of Woodhill, about two
hundred and twenty feet above the bed of the Devon, which flows
westward to join the Forth in the valley below, and fourteen
hundred below the apex of the mountain. From the summit,
wliich rises to an elevation of 1,770 feet above sea level, the eye
sweeps over an immense range of picturesque and interesting
scenery, stretching all the way from the German Ocean on the east
to the Campsic hills on the west, and includes, among other
attractive objects, the Lammermuir chain, the Bass Rock, Edin-
burgh, Arthur's Seat, the Pentland Hills, and tho lovely and classic
winding of the Forth. Perhaps the most interesting object for an
antiquarian in the whole parish of Alva would bo the Well of St.
Leif, or Lewanus, the tutelar saint of the district, which continues
to pour out its bright and sweet waters in the minister's glebe at a
little distance from the parish church. The places of worship are
Established, Free and United Presbyterian churches. In 1874
Jaines Johnston, Esq. erected baths and wiish-houses at the west
end of the town at a co^t of about £^,000. The parish of Alva
contains an area of 5,458 acres, and laad in 1871 a population of
4,233, that for the town beiug 4,096,
