WESTRUTHER, HOUNDSLOW AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
AVeSTRUTHER, is a parish, chiefly in the Lammermoor district.
The village, a smaU one, is 32 miles s.e. of Edinbm-gh, 8 from
Lauder, 6 w. by n. from Greenlaw, and 5 n. from Gordon, situated
on the road between Lauder and Dunse. The parish, which is six
miles in length by four in breadth, and containing 14,630 acres, is under
the best process" of husbandry. Spottiswoode, the fine residence of
Lady Jane Scott, is in this parish; Wedderlie, the seat of Lord
Blantyre.ie in the neighbourhood, and the ruins of Ively Castle,
the walls of which are pretty entire, stand in the north-eastern
corner of the parish. It was one of those castellated mansions of
residence and defence that were common on the borders before the
union of the two crowns, in the reign of James VI.
There are two places of worship— one under the Establishment,
the other a Free chm-ch. There is also a Board school. In this
parish is the village of Houndslow, a straggling assemblage of
dweUings. The land in the vicinity is of a barren nature, but great
I improvements have been made, and every year shows an increased
extent under culture. In 1871 the parish had a population of 784.
