PORTSOY AND FORDYCE.
XORTSOY is ft seaport in the parish of Fordyce, 178 miles n.
of Edinbm'gh, 82, e. by n. of Inverness, 18 e.n.e. of Fochabers,
and S w. by n. of Banff, situated on a tpnguo of land projecting
into the Moray Frith, at the head of one of those little bays by
which this part of the coast is in many places indented. It was
erected into a bnrgh of barony about the sixteenth century, by j
the Baron of Boyne, whose descendants, embracing the fortunes !
of the pretender, in 1715, forfeited their lands to the crown. They'
w:ere subsequently granted to the Earl of Findlater and Seafield,
and are still in the possession of that family. The town is small
and irregularly built, but as a port it is in a thriving condition.
The point of land on which it stands forms a safe harbour, which
has been greatly improved, and it is now sufficiently deep to moor
vessels of upwards of 100 tons burthen. Besides the proceeds of
the herring fishery, which has been actively prosecuted for many
yeai's, it enjoys a trade in the exportation of gi-ain and stone, and
the importation -of coal; fish curing and a woollen manufactory
are prominent branches among the general domestic business,
which, combined with the income resulting from the traffic of its
port, has elevated Portsoy into a position of some consequence as
a commercial town. The stone raised from the quarries of this
district (which has obtained the name of "Portsoy marble ") is a
beautiful mixture of red, green and white accumulations, and is
wrought into tea-cups, vases and small ornaments, chimney-pieces.
&c. Some singular specimens of schistus, and a species of
asbestos of a greenish hue are met with in this neighbourhood ;
but the most remarkable mineral production is a granite, of a
buff or flesh colour, which, except here and in Arabia, has not
been discovered throughout the world. This district also abounds
with excellent limestone. The burgh is under the jurisdiction of
a baron baillie and a justice of the peace, the Earl of Seatield is
superior.
The places of worship are a church of the Establishment, a
Free church, an Independent chapel, an Episcopal chapel, a United
Presbyterian chapel, and a chapel for Roman Catholics.
The parish of Fordyce is of great antiquity. The village ia
situated about S miles w. by s. from Portsoy, and owns at the
present day some celebrity from its educational institutions.
Smith's academy is a handsome modern building, in which nine
boys are educated and clothed. At the old Parochial School Sir
James Clark, Bart., phyeician in ordinary to Her Majesty, and
John Forbes, Esq., physician extraordiaary to his late Royal
Highness the Prince Consort received the early part of their
education. The most remarkable remnant of antiquity in the
village is a large castellated building, standing on the east side
of the square, and beuring the date of 1592; it originally belonged
to the Durn family, but is now the property of Lord Seafield.
