AYRSHIRE.
SLATER'S
MUIRKIRK
1 S a parish containing 30,429 acres, in Kyle district. The village, a
thriving and considerabla one, is 50 miles w.s.w. from Edinburgh,
30 s. from Glasgow, 26 e. by n. fi-om Ayr, 24 s e. from Kilmarnock,
and 16 N.w.lrom Sanquhar, situated near the right bank of the water
of Ayr, at the junction of the roads leading from Glasgow to Dum-
fries, and from Edinburgh to Ayr. Although iu a district rude and
bleak, the land is being fast reclaimed from its original mossy and
moorish character ; another considerable portion is, however, profit-
ably employed iu grazing and pasture, and in 1895, the black faced
sheep fed iu this parish carried the Highland Society's prize, and
also gained the first prize at the Paris Exhibition in 1862. Though
nature has not here been bountiful to the farmer, or encouraged the
labours of the agriculturist, she has been very kind to the miner,
for coal, iron and limestone are liberally dispensed throughout tbe
territory. At the EgUnton Iron Company's works are three blast
and several puddling furnaces, and rolling mills constantly in
operation, for the manufacture of pig and malleable iron. Banking
accommodation is afforded bv a branch of the Clydesdale Banking
Co., under the management of Mr. James Gibson. There are,
besides, extensive Ume works belonging to H. Howie Aird, Esq., of
Crossflatt and leased by Charles Howatson, Esq., who with James
Baird, Esq., of Cambusdoon, the Earl of Homo (of Douglas), and the
Honourable Mrs. Macadam Cathcart, are the principal proprietors
of the land in this parish. The parish is- also celebrated for grouse
and other shooting. Its length is nine miles by an average breadth
of about six ; bounded on the north-east by Douglas, on the south
and south-west by Auchinleck, and the west and north-west by Sorn
and Galston. The places of worship here are one Established
church, a Free church, and one for the United Presbyterians, an
Evangelical Union ehapel, and one Roman Catholic. The Glasgow
and S on th-We stern line of railway runs close to the village, at whicli
there is a station. There is a library in the village, which is v/eli
conducted. Fairs are held for hiring on the first Tuesday after the
16th February, and the first Thursday after the 18th December, aud
for cattle, &c., on the second Friday m June. Population of the
village, in 1871, 2,376; of the parish, 3,253.
