MAYBOLE AND THE VILLAGE OF CULROY OR MINISHANT.
lAYiOUfe IS a small neat msi-ket and post town, the capital of
lU rarisb, m ths district of Carrick, 87 miles s.w. from Edinburgh,
52 N. by E. from Portpatrick, 4i s.s.w. from Glasgow, 25 N.from Bal-
lantrac, 22 s. by w, from Kilmarnock, 12 n. by e. from Girvan, and
9 s. from Ayr. It lies i;i a charming part of the country, on tho
face of a gentle eminence v,-ith a southern exposure, and surrounded
by lovely scenery, fornied of parks, liigblv cultivated, :'ud hill and
dale, with a sea-view of " the busy Frith of Clyde," <,,■ i-.iK cm the
west, llaybole was created a free burgh of barony iu Kevember.
1=16, on .-■. grant to Gilbert, Earl of Cassilhs, the patron, and to the
provost and probondarieg. of tbe collegiate church of xUaybole, to
which belonged the lands whereon the town stands. In October,
1639, an act, ordaming tbe head court of Carrick to be held at May-
bole, was passed by the Lords of the Articles. The streets of tbe
town are narrow, and conlain no eminently fine places or public
buildings; several of tbe dwellings, nov/ inhabited by weavers, bear
a Yonerable aspect, and doubtless wore, at a distant period, the
domiciles of more dignified personages. The mansion house or
castle of the CassiUis family is the finest surviving specimen of the
winter seats formerly existing in Maybole : it is a stately well-built
structure, standing in tbe centre of the town, and is said to have
been the residence of tbe repudiated Countess of CassUlis. It is
now occupied by Thomas Dykes, Esq. factor to the Iklarquis of Ailsa,
who IS lord of the manor. The building now used as the town haU
belonged to the Kennedys, of Blairquban. The principal business
carried on here is the manufacture of boots and shoes ; there are
also two worlis for the manufacture of agricultural implements,
and weaving is carriefl on to some extent for Glasgow houses.
The collegiate chmch has been for sometime in ruins, and the
ground appropriated as a private cemetery for the Cassillis family,
ine parish church, a guond sacra, a Free chmch. United Presbv-
tnian church .and an Episcopal church are the places of worship.
All the old schools have been done away with, and a fine stone
building, two storeys in height, put up in place of them by the
School Board, at a cost of upwards of .£5,000, and capable of ac-
commodating 660 scholars. There are two other Board schools. in
the parish — one at ilinishant, which is a stone building, with ,i
house for the master adjoining, was buiJt in 1875 for one hundred
scholars, at a cost of ,41,200 ; and one at Fisherton, for one hundred
scholars, at a cost of £650. The town is governed by the polico
commissioners. Yearly and quarterly meetings of 'the Carrick
Farmers' Society are held in the town hall ; tbe annual one is on
tho first Thursday in .August, and the quarterly on the first
Thursday in the months of February, May and November; the
quarterly in August merges in tbe yearly assemblage. A " Knox "
club was instituted iu lt;2'l:, for the purpose of eommemoratiug
the zealous exertions of that extraordinary man. In the vicinity
are many interestuig obiects, among which is tho celebrated
ruins, called Crossraguel (noticed in tho sketch of Kirk-
oswald), and lulhenzie Castle, which was in a similar state
of dilapidation, but has of late years undergone repairs;
it once belonged to a branch of tbe CassUlis family, who
were for a long period hereditary baillics of Carrick. Ancient
coins have been frequently found iu considerable numbers. In
the neighbourhood are two remarkably fine springs of water,
popularly named "St. Cuthberts" and "Well Trees;" the latter
is said to yield ten thousand imperial gallons per hour. The
market is held on Thursday, and fairs on the third Thursday in
January, April, July and October. The acreage of the parish is
about 22,720. Tbe population of the lyjoad sacra parish in 1871 was
2,701, tho town having a population of :5,737.
CuLnoY or Minisiiakt is a smnll village in the parish of Hay-
bole, three miles and a balf from that to\Mi, on the road to Ajr,
from which it is live miles aa4 a half itistant. A manuf.ietoiy
for wooUeu goods is established in this village.
