from Newton Stewart to Glasgow, 36 miles from the formor, and l-l
from the latter. Tlie general surface of thijj parish is hilly — towards
the south and cast, mountainous and rocky; but the whole is more
or less cultivated. The 'Girvan runs tlirough the parish — the Doou
is its boundary for several miles, and the Dyrock water flows
through the village — which latter derives its name from a church
that formerly stood here, dedicated to St. Michael ; the present
religious structure, which is neat aud commodious, was built in
1787, on its site. In the churchyard is the tomb of Gilbert M'Adam,
who was shot in 1685, by the laird of Culzcau and Ballochmyle, for
his adherence to the covenautcrs. The annual fair is held on the
Friday before the last Wednesday in September. There was a new
Board school built in 1875 for 150 scholars, at a cost of .£1,100.

Dalrymple is a small village and parish in tho district of Kyle,
pleasantly situated on tho banks of the Doon, 4 miles n. from Kirk-
michacl. The parish, which is about eight miles at its extreme
length, and three in breadth, contains about 7,960 acres, and com-
prises some bL-autiful undulating aud flat land, mostly arable. In
the upper portion of the pariah is a coal miue, aud in some other
parts limo abounds. The nafaie Dalrymple is said to bo derived from
ValrymolCy signifying " the dale on wliich tho king was slain," and
it is supposed thatCoiluw, a king of tho Britons, was killed in battle
in this place; its Gaelic name, however, wns Dnil-a-C'hriLim-Puili, or
*'dale of the crooked pool." Near the Roman road, which intersects
tho parish, was found in a moss a vessel of Roman bronze, by anti-
quarians conjectured to bo of that kind used by the priests in their
sacrificial oblations; and in 1884 was discovered, near the same
spot, an ancient vase; both these relics ara in tho pusaessiou of tho
Kev. Mr. Wallace, the minister of Dah-ymple. In the pariah aro
three British fortlets on commanding sites, and tho rains of thrco
castios; these with the beauaiul louh of Martuaham, the waters of
which are covered annually with the yellow aJid white water lily,
aro objects of cousidorabio interest aud curiosity with the visitor to
this district. The Established and Free churches are the places of
worship, aud there is a new sLoue school and school-house built by
the School Board in 187J, at a cost of upwards of i:l,50L), to accom-
modate 150 scholars. In 1971 tho village had a population of 309,
