CLACHAN, TAYINLOAN, KILLEAN, GLENBARR, BALLACHANTUIE,
AND KILKENZIE,
WITH THE ISLANDS OF GIGHA, CAEA, AND THEIR VICINITIES.
V'LACHAN is a viHage in the parisli of KUcnImonell, situated in a
fine valley on the lianks oJ a small stieam, over which is a good !
•tone bridge, and on the road from Tarbort to Campbeltown, 11
miles s. of the former, and 26 N. of the latter place. In the village
is the parish church, a chapel in which Free Church service is held,
and a board school; and a little to the east is the residence of
"William MKinnon, Esq., of BalinakUl, who is the proprietor of the
village, and who has effected considerable improvements. In the
vicinity, to the north-west, is a vitrified fort on a large scale, and
another contiguous fortification in ruins ; and among the hills to
the east are several fresh water lochs, well stored with trout. Eight
miles south, on the same road, and near the coast is
TAYINLOAN, a small village in the parish of Killean, about 19
miles from Campbeltown ; about half a mile in a northern direction
IS Largie Castle, the residence of Charles Morton M'Donald, Esq.,
and opposite the village, but separated from the mainland by a
sound about four miles broad, is the island of
GlGHA, which is nearly six miles long, and from two to three
miles broad, and is the property of J. W. Scarlett, Esq., of Achamore
House. An Established church and a board school are in the islaud.
_ Cara, a neighbouring island, which is about one mile in length,
IS the property of Charles Morton M'Donald, Esq.
KiLLEAN is about four miles south of Tayinloan. Near the road
stands the parish church, a small neat stone building, erected in
1787, and the parochial school; and about a quarter of a mile fur-
ther, on an eminence, is a handsome Free church, with a tower,
erected in 1846, and situated close by is also a board school. Seals
are very often seen lying on the rocks uear the coast. Population
in 1871 of the quoad sacra parish, 1,614. Nearly three miles south
from Killean and twelve north of Campbeltown is the village of
Glknbakr, situate on the banks of the Barr water, which is well
stocked with tine salmon and trout, and nearly a mile from the shore,
in a rich and well cultivated glen, is Barr House, the property of
Keith Macalister, Esq., a tine structure, built in the Gothic style,
and from its site an extensive view of the sea and north-east coast
of Ireland may be obtained. Three miles south of Gienbarr and
nine and a half north-west of Campbeltown, on the main road near
the shore, is
BALLACHANTUIE, a small village in the united parish of Killean
and Kilkenzie, containing a small church, erected in 1825, and a
board school. The road between this village and Campbeltown has
been much improved of late years, and a new road several miles in
length, was cut along the shore, at a great expense, to avoid the
hills on the old road. The chief employment of the people on tnia
coast is fishing and agriculture.
