ABERDEENSHIRE.
SLATER'S
STEICHEN, ABERDOUR, TYRIE AND NEW PITSLIGO.
S
TRICHEN is a parish in the district of Buchan. The village,
"which is a neat one, is well supplied -with water, and there is also a
gas company, but the streets are not lighted ; it is 33J^ miles n. of
Aberdeen, 20 w. of Banff, IG w. by n. from Turriff, 15 n. by w. from
Peterhead, and 9 s. from Fraserburgh, situated on the north bank of
the Ugie. The town house is a conveuieut and elegant structure,
erected in the year 1816, by the Right Hon. Lord Lovat, at an ex-
pense of £2,000. On the side of one of the hills in this parish are
the figures of a horse and a stag, formed by large pieces of stone,
which have a singular effect at a distance. Upon the same hill is
hunter's lodge, on which is inscribed, "This hunter's lodge, Robb
Gibb commands." The Formartine and Buchan section of the
Great North of Scotland Railway passes through the parish, and has
a station in the village. The places oi worship are a church of the
Estabhshment, a Free church, an Episcopalian chapel, and a United
Presbyterian chapel; also one for the Roman Catholics; and tbe
schools are, a public school aud two or three private ones. Fairs
are held here on the first Thursday of every month. Population of
Strichen in 1871, was 1,184; and of the whole parish, 2,254.
Aberdour parish, 9 miles w. of Fraserburgh, aud 16 e. of Banff,
stretches along the Moray Frith for about ten miles. The shore
here is so bold and precipitous, that there are only three places where
boats can effect a landing; and the rocks have been excavated by
the sea into innumerable caves, one of which is ninety feet long
and twenty-two broad. Upon a precipice overhanging the sea are
the ruins of the ancient castle of Dimdargue, a place of gi-eat strength
and importance in feudal times, and noted for sustaining a long
siege inl3;!iG, when Henry de Beaumont, the EngUsh Earl of Buchan,
was obliged to capitulate to Andrew Murray, regent of Scotland
during the unwarrantable captivity of King Robert Bruce in Eng-
land. The small village of Pennan, situated on the shore of Aber
dour bay, is chiefly inhabited by fishermen. Population of Aber-
dour, in" 1871, 720 ; and of the whole parish, 2,176.
Tyrie parish extends about ten miles in length, by four and a
half in breadth. The surface is agreeably diversified with hill and
dale, heath, moss, meadow, corn land, aud grass parks. On the
northern verge of the parish is the village church of Tyrie, an an-
cient structure, supposed to have been originally erected about the
year 1U04, when the Thane of Buchan routed the Danish army upon
the neighbouring eminences. The late Sh William Forbes founded,
in the southern quarter of the parish, tbe village of New Pitsligo,
into which the weaving of linen was introduced, but since power-
loom weaviug began, it gradually dticreased; and, at the present
time, there is scarcely any done, but the weaving of dress winceys
is carried on to a considerable extent, and affords employment to
some of its inhabitants. The village is now lighted by gas, aud
near it are a few good gi-anite quarries. Population of New Pitsligo,
in 1871, 2,126 ; and of the whole parish of Tyrie, 8,446.
