HEV.' MACHAR is n parish in tho district of Bucban, lying
;hiefly ill Abevdeenshiro, but prtrtly ill the t-ounty of B;uiff; it ex-
lends nine mibjs iu lonfith. by tv,'(i and ii li-alf in breadth ; the parissh
kirk is ton miles from Aberdeen. The country is generally rather
Hat, and the soil is mostly arable, with several patches of \yet mossy
land, while in the southern quarter are some fine plantations. There
is a amaU lake near the boundary of Old Uachar, called Bishop's
Lech, in wliich is ?n island, whereon stands the ruins of a castle
once lii^longing to the bishops of Aberdeen.
CBAI5 DAir, in the neighbourhood of Tarves, has a r.cat chapel of
the Unitad Secession, .and a free school, ciui.twed by a Mr. Peter
Barron, of Harply, iu the county of Norfolk. The river Ytban passes
through this district, watering a soil various in quality, but mostly
fertile.
DvoE parish is of consblcrahle extent, lying- on the south bank of
the Don, which riv.rr separates it from Fiiilrav, and Newhills parish
divides it from Old Aberdeen. The Tyre-bogar-ri.lge runs through
the district from south to north; one of the loftiest hills is sur-
mounted by a Druidical temple. The parish kirk is seven and a
half miles from Aberdeen, and four from New Macliar. The Great
North of Scotland Kailway CompaBv have a station here.

FreiEAY parish is five miles in length, Ijv from three to four iu
breadth. On the banks of the Don the land is fertile and susceptible
of profitable cultivation, but other parts are hilly. Vn abbey tor-
merly existed in this parish— the Rev. ,T. Leslie, the iato miiiiste-'
possessed a stone inscribed with the (iate 1S8(>— supposed to have
formed a fi-action of the building, and a sliver cup, dated 1633 whlcli
tradition records fej have been manufactnred from tho silver 'of tho
image of St. Iteddin, the tutelar saint of fhe parish. The kirk is
about ten miles and a hr.lf from Aberdeen. There is a statio-i ou
tho Great North of Scot and lino at Khialdie, about one mile fro'^i
th3 village of Haddon. Within tho parish is a considcralile mill for
; the mannfacture of woollen goods, the machinery of which is worked
; both by steam and water power. Fairs are lield ou the first Satur-
day iu February, April, July and December.
I Cdny parish extends about five miles in length aud breadth and
contains a neat and pleasantly situated village, U miles k of j'ber
been, and 4 from New Maohar. The soil of tho parish is for the
most part fertile, and tho land enclosed and well cultivated It
: has a well conducted school. Fairs are held at Utiny Station the
last Thursday in every month. '
