KINCARDINE-O'NEIL, CHARLESTOWN OF ABOYNE
AND GLENTANNER, BIRSE AND LUMPHANNAN.
INCARDINE-O'NEIL, a parish and village— the latter, the seat .i cofQn, with a cross cut upon it. Loch Kinord is situated about
of a presbytery, ia situated on the public road and the banks of
the Dee, between Aberdeen and Ballater, 26 miles from the
former, IG from the latter, and 24 from Stonehaven. St. Erchaus
well, whose waters are said to be of a medicinal character, is situa-
ted near this village. At Torphins, in this parish, is a station on
the Dee Side Railway, about 3 miles from Kincardine-O'Neil.
Deas station is about two miles from Kincardine, and in the
neighbouring parish of Aboync. The buildings which principally
Burround the church, command an extensive i)i06pect up the river,
towards the Grampian mountains, and the place is much resorted
to for tlio summer retirement of invalids, in early days Kincar-
dine was of some note, for it is upon record that a wooden bridge
was built across the Dee GOO years ago, the expense of which was
defrayed by a knight called Allan Durward. The parish, which
is about seven miles in length by six in extreme breadth, is partly
hilly and pastoral and partly arable, while in some places are
thriving plantations. The greater proportion of the inhabitants
4 miles from Aboyne. It contains some small islands, on one of
which there is said to have been a castle built by Malcolm Caumore,
and in it have been Jound article? of antiquity, among them an old
axe, a canoe, and a bronze pot. A public library and reading room
has lately been erected in Aboyne.
Fairs are held at Aboyne on the third Thursday in January,
March, May, August, September and December; second Wednesday
in April, la^ Wednesday in June, the Friday after Aiky fair in July,
first Tuesday and Wednesday in Octobei (old style), and second
Wednesday in November.
BiRSE, the most southern parish of Aberdeenshire, lies on the
south bank of the river Dee, and forms nearly a square of ten miles.
There are three districts in the parish, enclosed by the same number
of ridges of hills, which take a south-westerly direction towards the
Grampians from the river Dee; in the valleys formed by these
ridges run two streams of water — the Fcuch and the Chattie. The
proportion of uncultivated land is very considerable, but the old
are occupied in agriculture, and others are employed by the maiiu- system of agriculture is giving way to modern improvements. The

CHARLESTOWN, or Charlestown OF Aboyne, HOW generally called
Aboyne, is a small village in the parish of Aboyne, distx-ict of Mar,
4 miles from Kincardine, 4 from Glentanner, and 11 from Ballater,
road from Dundee to Inverness passes through this parish. Large
upright stones, cairns and other monuments of antiquity are fre-
quently met with, as is limestone in abundance. The parish church
is distant about 28 miles from Aberdeen. The manse of the Free
church was erected in 1844, the church itself being built in 1843.
In the parisli cf Birse are the remains of two ancient encampments.
Lumphannan parish lies to the north-west of the villuge of Kin-
cardine-O'Ncil, and is about six miles in length and four in breadth,
and is nearly surrounded by hills. The name signifies " the bare
situated on the north bank of the Dee. The parish is united to that little valley," but this designation is not in the present day appli'
