PATH-HEAD,
CRANSTON, EDGEHEAD AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
JT ATH-HEAD, or Path-head Ford, is a considerable village in the
parish of Crichton, 11 miles s.s.b. from Edinburgh, five from Dal-
keith, and 3 from Fala, situated on both sides of the Lauder, the
great south county, and London road, passing through it. The
village is about two miles from that of Crichton (described along
with Heriot, which see]. The principal street is broad and straight,
and the houses, which are mostly of one storey, are well built. The
Burrounding country abounds with beautiful scenery, and several
Beats of the gentry contribute in ornamenting the district. Popu-
lation of the village in 1871, 667.
The parish of Cranston, or Granstoun, is intersected by the river
Tyne, having Dalkeith and Newbattle on the north and west, and
Crichton on the south, extending five miles in length by three in
breadth, but very narrow in the middle. The land is high and un-
dulating, but is well cultivated and enclosed, and embellished with
numerous and delightful plantations. A handsome church, of white
freestone, in the Gothic style of architecture, is within the parish,
on the road to Dalkeith. Within the parish is Oxenford Castle and
Preston Hall — the former the seat of the Earl of Stair. The parish
comprises the colliery village of Edge-head; the Oxenford colliery
at this place producing coal of a very excellent quaUty. Codsland
and Preston ai-e two other villages in Cranston parish, but they
contain nothing worthy of note. Acreage 5,100. In 1871 Cranston
had a population of 1,036.
