COLINTON.
BALERNO, OURKIE. HERMISTON, JUNIPER GREEN, klRKKEWTON, AND SLATEFORD.
c
OLINTON, or Collington, is a village and parish, the latter lying ■
at the base of the Pentland Hills, part of which it includes. The
grounds rise beautifully fi'om the vale of Corstorphine, and are finely
cultivated, enclosed, and planted ; the water of Leith passes through I
them, and its banks are here romantic and wooded. The cburchl
and manse of Colinton, standing in the midst of lovely scenery, are
four miles from Edinburgh. Bonally Tower, the seat of the late |
Lord Cockburn, is in tliis parish, and is now the residence of Pro- 1
fessorW. B. Hodgson, ll.b. The mauufactm-e of paper is carried ^
on extensively both here and at Slatkford, a village in this parish; ■
and the district abounds with limestone and freestone. On the ■
lands of Comiston, which lie to the east, are ve.^tiges of a very ex- '.
tensive encampment, near which is a rude massive block of whin-
atone, called " Camusstone," said to indicate the burial place of
some Danish commander. On these lands the fountain for the ,
Edinburgh water-cistern was first erected. Logau-houso Hill, in
this pari>*h, is a t'onsiderable eminence, rising upwards of 1,500
foot abovo the level of the s'ju. Population of the parish in 1871.
3,644.
The parish of Curkik is bounded by Corstorphine and Ratho on
the north, Colinton ou the west, aud the Pentland Hills skirt it on
the south. Through the low grounds runs the water of Leith, and
on its northern biiuks, six railes distant from Edinburgh, stiinds
the village of CuRRii-:, through which the road to Lanark passes.
The church is erected on a very commanding situation. The ma-
nufacture of paper and snuff prevails in this parish to some extent,
the former particularly. On the estate of Maleuy, beyond Currie,
and rising above the banks of the Leith, is Lennox Tower.ancitmtly
the residence of the family of Lennox, as well as the occasionsii
one of Mary Queen of Scots. At a short distaiico from it, on the
opposite bank of the river, are the ruins of auuthcr ancient edifice,
once the mansion of the Skenes of Currie-hiU. The parish alsn
contains the house of Babovton, which is remarkable as haviug
been used as a hunting seat by royalty at two distant periods —
first by James VI. of Scotland, previous to bis accession to th»
English throne, and secondly by Charles X. of France, after his e>-
pulsiou from his dominions in 1830. In 1871 the parish had a popu-
lation of 2,360, and the village 3*29 of that number.
KiRKNEWTON, ahout nine miles from Edinburgh, is a siwa)! 'jl^
lage and parish; ths latter, which incliides the abrogated parochial
division of Calder Cleve, is bounded on the soutii and west h-/ Mid.
Calder, on the east by Currie and Ratho, aud on the north by Slate-
