ROYAL PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY OF
GLASGOW.
Instituted 9tli November, 1802.
For the advancement of the mathematical, physical,
and natural sciences, with their applications ; and to
promote the diffusion of scientific knowledge. Meets
fortnightly, from November to April inclusive, in the
Society's Buildings, Adelaide Place, 207 Bath street.
Possesses an extensive scientific library. Consists of
about 1100 members and associates — honorary, corre-
sponding, and ordinary. Connected with the society
are mathematical and physical, sanitary and social
economy, architectural, geographical and ethnological,
economic science, and historical and philological

THE SCOTTISH SOCIETY OF LITERATURE
AND ART.
Instituted 1886.
The object of the Society is to encourage the study
of literature and art, by promoting public lectures,
by organising private meetings for the reading of
essays and discussion among the members, by publica-
tion of its transactions, and by other kindred methods.
Members pay an annual subscription of 7s. 6d.
and may introduce one friend to public lectures
and meetings.

For the promotion of the science of geography in
all its branches. The annual contribution is £1 Is.

THE ROYAL GLASGOW INSTITUTE OF
THE FINE ARTS.

The Institute was established to promote a taste
for art generally, and more especially to encourage
contemporary art, to further the diffusion of artistic
and aesthetic knowledge, and to aid the study, ad-
vancement, and development of art in its applications.
This it has done in various ways, but chiefly by means
of exhibitions, which have been held annually since
1861, tbe average number of vi^orks shown during
recent years being about 800. As a rule an art union
has been arranged of recent years in connection with
each exhibition, the aggregate sales eflPected in this way
alone amounting to over £16,000.
By various mean's the Institute has done much to
promote a taste for good art. and to foster its produc-
tion in Glasgow and the neighbourhood ; and in 1896
Her Majesty Queen Victoria created it a Royal body
in recognition of the good work it has done.
The fee for ordinary membership is £10. This
entitles the subscriber to a family season ticket to all
exhibitions, &c., as well as to other privileges. Ex-
traordinary members, subscribing £25, have further
privileges.

The objects of the Club shall be the study and
promotion of music and the kindred arts.
The membership is limited to 300 ordinary mem-

GLASGOW SOCIETY OF ARTISTS.
Instituted 1901.
As no society confined to artists existed at the
time in Glasgow, this society was formed in 1902 for
the purpose of consolidating the profession, and to
promote and encourage art, by holding exhibitions
and discussing such questions as affect the position
and interests of artists. The society is open to
painters in oil, water, and pastel, black and white
artists, and sculptors.
