The society was instituted in the year 1806, and
the sphere of its operations includes the parliamentary
boundary of the City of Glasgow situated on the
south side of the river Clyde. The object of the
society is to afford pecuniary or other relief to the
natives and old inhabitants of the Barony of Gorbals
who are of respectable character ; have been in bet-
ter circumstances, but reduced to a decayed and
indigent state ; and who, not being otherwise suffi-
ciently provided for, stand in need of the society's
aid ; but no one receives assistance from its funds
who is in receipt of parochial relief. Advanced age,
urgent necessity, aud respectability of character are
indispensable. Length of residence, next to nativity
preferred ; but applicants must have one or other of
those qualifications. Non-residence at the time of
making application will not exclude from the benefits
of the society. No one is allowed to participate in
the benefits of the Society who is under fifty years of
age, unless labouring under permanent bodily infirmity

ST. ANDREW'S AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.

The objects of the Association incln^la the in-
struction of persons in rendering first aid in cases
of accidents or sudden illness, and in the transport
of the sick and injured ; the instruction of persons
in the elementary principles and practice of home
nursing and hjgiene; the placing .and maintaining
of ambulance waggons, stretchers, and other appli-
ances necessarv for the relief of the injured, in such
situations as may be considered advisable, to enable
assistance to be given with the least possible delay ;
the manufacture, purchase, and distribution by sale
or presentation of ambulance appliances or material,
and the formation of ambulance depots in or near
railway stations, shipbuilding yards, mines, fac-
tories, and other centres of industry and traffic; the
organisation of ambulance corps, invalid transport
corps, and nursing corps ; and generally, the pro-
motion of instruction in, and carrying out, works
for the relief of suffering of the sick and injured in
peace or war.
A waggon will be sent in charge of a trained
attendant to any accident within the city or the
Burghs of Partick, Govan, or Kinning Park, free of
all cost. The waggons are available by day or night,
and messages should be sent either by telegraph
or telephone, when they will be immediately at-
tended to. The Association also undertakes, on cer-
tain conditions, the removal of invalids, application
being previously made on a prescribed form. Sub-
scribers are entitled to the use of a waggon free,
and in the case of non-subscribers, the charge will
