King, Bart., and others ; chairman of committee,
W. G. Gardiner (of James Gardiner & Co.); G. W.
Service, 175 West George Street, hon. secretary and
treasurer.
This society has been formed for the relief of old
and infirm seamen, of whom there are large numbers
in the city of Glasgow and district, whose means of
support are extremely limited, and many of whom
are practically destitute. The society gives assist-
ance, by pensions or otherwise, to seamen connected
with Glasgow and district, who have served for at
least twenty-five years at sea, and are in want, and
whose service has, at least in part, been in Glasgow-
owned ships. The committee feel that this society
should commend itself generally to the citizens of
Glasgow, the great wealth and advancement of the city
being very much dependent on its connection with the
sea. The committee therefore make an urgent appeal
for contributions, as there are at present many de-
serving cases being declined on account of insufficiency
of funds. Subscriptions, donations, and legacies may
be sent to the honorary secretary and treasurer, G.
W. Service, 175 West George Street.
