CHARITABLE AND FRIENDLY INSTITUTIONS.
113
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY.
Established in Glasgow, 1848.
The special object of the Society is to visit, and
relieve with money, food, and clothing, poor families
at their own homes ; but no work of charity which
is possible for a layman to undertake is regarded as
foreign to its members, and its charity is dispensed
without distinction of race or creed. During the
past year 5472 families, comprising 20,172 persons,
were relieved. The number of visits made to the
poor in their own homes was 52,487. Work was
procured for 308 persons, and 196 others were
assisted to work for themselves. 141 were sent to
friends. Through the exertions of the Society 97
admissions were obtained for persons to the infirm-
aries. The Society has also established a News
Boys' Night Shelter, -where a number of the most
necessitous of these poor children are received. The
total expenditure of the society for the past year
was £5845 12s. Ojd. The work is carried on gi-atui-
tously by 793 active members, all laymen, belonging
to the various Catholic congregations in the arch-
diocese of Glasgow. The Society holds no pro-
perty, nor has it any investments. Its income is
derived entirely from voluntary contributions. The
money is expended as received, in various ways, for
the relief and assistance of the poor.
Subscriptions and donations will be thankfully
received and acknowledged by any of the following
members of the executive committee, viz. : — Francis
Henry, 10 Monteith row, president, central council ;

The aim of the Society is to provide warm clothing
for the poor fever patients when about to be dis-
missed from the comforts of the hospitals to their own
homes. In too many cases their original clothing is
scanty and utterly insufficient to protect even a
vigorous person from the cold. But for the aid of
the society they would, when divested of the warm
suits provided for use within the hospital, be sent
out in tattered garments, as well as with enfeebled
bodies, almost certainly to the permanent injury of
their health. The utmost care is taken that the
articles are given to the needy and deserving only.
There is no convalescent home for poor fever patients.
