CHARITABLE AND FRIENDLY INSTITUTIONS.
109
DISCHARGED PRISONERS AID SOCIETY,
Cathedral Square.
The Hon. the Lord Provost, chairman ; Jas. Nicol,
City Chamberlain, hen. treasurer ; W. S. Peat,
hon. secretary; R. M. B. Colqulioun, superintendent ;
Miss Cook, bible woman for female prisoners.
103,939 men and 46,888 women, in all 150,827
discharged prisoners and convicts have been dealt
with by us since March, 1889, at which period
the directors inaugurated a change in the method of
their operations among this unfortunate clas-s of our
criminal population. Our handsome building in
'"Cathedral Square for the reception of the discharged
prisoners and convicts has now been occupied by us
for eight years, and its close contiguity to the exit
gate of the Glasgow Prison makes it peculiarly
suitable for the objects pursued by our Society.
There they are met every morning at half past
eight by two of our officials, and are each pre-
sented with a card of invitation to our ball, where
a hearty breakfast of coffee with an ample supply
of bread and butter is provided for them. After
family worship every one of this large number is
conversed with, and the name and the charge
against him, with the sentence, entered in our books.
From the outset tbey are informed that help in shape
of money is not given, the Society being prepared
to adopt the plan of securing remunerative employ-
ment for every man who is disposed honestly to
accept it. To this course we have steadily adhered,
and the result is that during the thirteen years of its
prosecution 20,704 men have been placed in various
large industrial works in the citv and neighbourhood.
In 1903 work was found for 1248 men.
Admission to the Houses of Shelter in Garnethill,
Whiievale Street, and Magdalene Institution, Stirling
Road, is procured for those women who desire to
break with their old courses.
DOG AND CAT HOME FOR GLASGOW AND
WEST OF SCOTLAND,
Craigton, Ibrox ; office, 28 Bath Street.
Established in 1894.
Chairman, Rev. John Brown, B.D., Bellahouston ;
secretary, Henry F. Lowndes, Esq., writer; superin-
tendent, Mr. Jas. Watson.
The objects of the Home are:— (1) To clear the
streets of stray dogs, with the co-operation of the
police, and rescue lost dogs and cats from starva-
tion and ill treatment, and, when necessary, to
destroy them mercifully ; (2) to find homes for use-
ful and valuable anima's ; (3) to lodge dogs and
cats at a reasonable charge. Dogs and cats are
painlessly destroyed by request of their owners by
means of a Lethal chamber at nominal charges.
These can either be received at the home, or sent
for as may be arranged. Note. — No animals suffer-
ing from contagious or infectious diseases are admitted.
The home may be visited daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Closed on Sundays unless on special business.
To maintain the Home sufficiently involves the
expenditure of a considerable sum annually, and the
committee, while gratefully acknowledging the gener-
ous aid they have already received, earnestly hope
that a widespread support will be given for this
very necessary purpose.
SCOTTISH LABOUR COLONY ASSOCIATION
Mid-Locharwoods, Ruthwell, R.S.O.
This charitable institution was established in 1897
for the purpose of providing work for unemployed
able-bodied men, under the healthy and desirable
conditions of farm labour, in exchange for food and
shelter, with a small cash bonus in cases of merit.
The men are first tested in the Kyle Street Shelter of
the Charity Organization Society, and, if deserving,
drafted to the Colony, where they stay for three
or four months. Thereafter, suitable situations are
obtained for them. The farm is situated about eight
miles from Dumfries, and borders the Lochar Moss,
which extends ialand for over ten miles, affording
abundance of work in its reclamation for many years
to come. The scheme is a practical Christian social
and successful work for reclaiming unfortunates and
social breakdowns, and forms one of the best solutions
to the difficult problem of how to provide work for
the mass of the unemploytd.
Nearly 300 men have been dealt with, and the
majority report " Doing well."
The farm has just been purchased in order to
secure the benefits of all improvements, but there is
a debt of £3500 over it, and the directors are anxious
to see this cleared off. About £300 to £600 per
annum is also required to maintain the work.
Contributions thankfully received and acknow-
ledged by the hon. treasurer, John W. Gourlay, C.A.,
180 Hope Street, Glasgow.
