Instituted 1865.
The Society has for its object the religious, educa-
tional, and social elevation of the boys and girls of
Glasgow. Membership — 16,847 lads and girls, and
1511- voluntary workers. It has 82 branches in the
city and suburbs.

The London Missionary Society was founded in
1795 to spread the knowledge of Christ among
leathen and other unenlightened nations. It is en-
lirely unsectarian ; its fundamental principle being
' not to send Presbyterianism, Independency, Epis-
lopacy, or any other form of church order and
|overnment, but the glorious Gospel of the blessed
jod to the heathen, leaving it to the minds of the
persons whom God may call into the fellowship of
lis Son from among them, to assume for themselves
uch form of church government as to them shall
ippear most agreeable to the Word of God." A large
taff of male and female missionaries, drawn from the
arious evangelical denominations at home, and a
iiuch larger staff of trained native ministers and
eachers, carry on its work in Africa, India, China,
'olynesia, &c. The annual meetings of the Glasgow
Auxiliary take place in the third week of November

To promote the social, moral, and religious welfare
of canal boatmen and their families. The means
employed are — preaching the gospel in the Institute
and in the open air ; the promotion of Sabbath
schools; the establishment of mothers' meetings,
penny banks, temperance societies, and bands of
hope ; the circulation of books, tracts, copies of the
