JAMES COCHRANE & CO.
GENERAL BRASS FOUNDERS, GREENSIDE LANE, EDINBURGH,
Beg to intimate, that they continue to manufecture, and to sell, both wholesale and retail, Gas
Fittings of all kinds; also Gas Meters and Block Tin Tubes; and that, in consequence of
employing Steam Power, they are enabled to do their work in the best manner, and at moderate
prices.
Dwelling Houses, &c. carefully fitted up in an expeditious and substantial manner. A variety
of Lustres, Pendants, Lanterns, Brackets, &c. always on hand.
J. C. & Co.'s Gas Meters, — which are now materially reduced in price, — they can particularly
recommend, having devoted much attention to their improvement. The internal working parts are
of brass and block tin, which are not acted on by the Gas, and the outer case is of cast iron, which
protects the interior from injury. They beg also to refer to the annexed cut and description :
AB
A, Entrance pipe.
B, Exit pipe.
C, Water funnel.
D, Syphon pipe.
E, for Gas Company's Seal.
Let the Gas Meter be fixed perfectly level, where it will not be exposed to frost ; then connect the
service pipe to the coupling A, and the pipe for conveying the gas to the burners to the coupling B.
Fill the Meter with water by the funnel C, till it begin to run at the syphon D. The water will then
be at the proper level, and the Meter ready for use. A little water will require to be added occasionally,
according to the temperature of the situation.
Each revolution of the first or highest wheel indicates one cubic foot of Gas consumed, the next
10 feet, the third 100, the fourth 1000, the fifth 10,000 ; and in large Meters, where the index consists
of six wheels, the sixth indicates 100,000.
Edinburgh, Greensidk Lane,
Jufy, 1832.
