CIRCULATING LIBRARY OF MODERN
PUBLICATIONS.
ESSRS R. & J. CHAMBERS
propose making some alterations in their
system of lending out books. Impressed with a
sense of the iuequality and injustice which enter
into the whole plan of Subscriptions, and which
affect the Customer and Librarian alike, they
aban<loii th;it part of their system, except in respect
of Country Readers, where it is unavoidable; and,
in (iriler to meet the convenience of those wlio
generally read by Subscription, they will henceforth
lend out their books at a cheaper rate per night.
By this meaus they expect to obtain — what tliey
have always felt to be grievously wanted in the
management of a Circulating Library — an induce-
ment for their Customers to detain no book longer
than is necessary, and to take only as many volumes
at a time as they require. No individual will now
be able to obtain more of the general advantages of
the Library than what is exactly to be paid for, and
no one will have to complain that he is deprived of
his proper share by the avidity of others. The
general and most beneficial result must be a far
freer circulation of the books, and an increased
reputation to the Library, not only for reduction of
charges, but also for its promptitude in gratifying
the particular necessities of Customers.
The following is the new scale of prices at which
Books will be lent : —
For every Volume of a Book published before
the year 1825, Id. per night.
For every Volume of a Book published later than
1825, and more than one year old, duodecimo, yd.
per night ; octavos, 2d.

at the rate of Haif-a-guinea a Volume, 2d. a night
during the first two months ; after that a reduced
rate, in proportion to the popularity of the work.
For every Volume of a i^ew Work published at
more than Ha!f-a-guinea a Volume, tid. a night
during the first two months.
Quarto Volumes dearer, in proportion to the
price of the work.

Contract.

his Friends and the Public, that he con-
tinues to give instructions on this much admired
instrument, both at his own house and at the
