gation, of the Relief persuasion, was received into
communion with the established church, at their
own request and that of their minister. The cha-
pel stands on the north side of the town ; and is re-
spectably attended.
The parish of Dundee was at first divided a-
mong the three ordained clergymen of the old and
south churches. From the increase of the inhabit-
ants, the duties of visiting, &c. became very heavy
on each of these. At present the parish and town
are divided among the five ministers on the estab-
lishment ; and the two ministers of the chapels of
ease, who are ordained. The minister who preaches
in the Gaelic chapel is likewise ordained, and takes
charge of his own people.
All these churches and chapels are considered
as one parish ; and all their ministers and elders
compose only one kirk-session.
The Magistrates have lately purchased a large
building at the west end of the town, which was
erected by Mr Haldane, and was occupied for se-
veral years by his followers. It is now to be a
Chapel of Ease, on the regular establishment of the
church ; and, from its size and situation, will give
every accommodation to that quarter of the town.
In a place so well inhabited as Dundee, there
are numerous dissenting congregations. Though
these various sects indicate zeal and attachment to
religious principles, and perhaps too much attention
to theological controversies ; yet they have given
little disturbance to the general harmony ; and in- 1|
stead of increasing bigotry, they have been found
to weaken it. Mutual toleration evidently prevails,
