STRAITON,
xa. Well situated and handsome village in Ayrshire,
is distant from Glasgow 48 miles, Kilmarnock
26, Ayr 14, Maybole 8, Girran 14, Dailly 8, and
Diilraelliliglon 6'. It contains a neat parish church,
the patronage of which is vested in the crown.
About half a'mile S. of the village, are the vestiges
of an oblong entrenchment, which commands^ an
extensive view, and near to which various ancient
relics have been found, particularly two carved
urns filled with ashes. Many of the inhabitants are

occupied in woollen weaving. The river Girvan
flow^ close to the village,
Patna is a small village situate in the same
parish, and upon the banks of the river Doon. It
IS the property of William Fullarton esq. of Skeldon,
and the inhabitants are chiefly employed in the
lime and coal works, of both which articles there is
abundance. There also is a good school in the
villasjc. ^

TORBOLTON,
Pleasant village in the parish of the same name,
and in the county of Ayr, is distant from the county
town 7 miles, from Kilmarnock 8, Irvine 12, and
Mauchline 12. The church is a very handsome erec-
tion of .stone, with an elegant spire and clock, with
four dials ; it was finished m 1821 at a cost of 25067 ;
there is also a neat chapel for Burghers, the minis-
ter of which conducts a sabbath evening school. —
Several benefit societies are carried on with success
for the relief of poor persons, and a savings bank

was established on the 26th November, 1818, but
with little success. The village, which is surround-
ed by a fine country and within sight of the sea, co-
vers a considerable space of ground, and contains
some very handsome nouses. A subscription libra-
ry, instituted <ibout twelve years ago, affords re-
creation and instruction to the subscribers. A fair
is held on tha first Tuesday in June, (Old Style)
and another in October ; there is also a horse-race
in August.
