OLD CUMNOCK,
jHLN irregularly built tovru of Ayrshire, is distant
from Ediiibursh 60 miles, Glasgow 36, Ayr 16,
Dumfries 40, Kilmarnock 16, and Sorn 4. As it is
on the high road from Erigland to Gldsgow, the
passing of the different coaches gives it an air of
Dus^ importance, and adds considerably to the pros-
perity of the inhabitants. Here those beautiful
articles, known by »he name of Scotch snuff-boxes,
were first made ; which business continues to form
a valuable branch of manufacture, and is still con-
fined to Cumnock, with one or two exceptions.
The places of worship are a church of the establish-
POST OFFICE — Post Mistress. Sarah Simson. Mail arrives every afternoon at four, and departs
every evening at seven.

originally belonged to the Burghers. To the pa-

tweuty-ftve pounds annually was left by Charles
Duncan, esq. late merchant of London and native
of Old Cumnock, for the education of twelve poor
children. The market, fpnnerly held on Thursday,
is now discontinued. Fairs are held annually on
the last Tuesday in May, the first Tuesday in July,
and the third Tuesday in October ; all old style.-r-
