OCHILTREE
LS a small, but pleasant village in the parish of
the same name, on the high road from Ayr to
Dumfries aud Edinburgh, distant from the latter
place 64 miles, from Ayr 12, Stair ^i. Old Cum-
nock 4, Glasgow 37, Dumfries 49, Sanquhar 22,
Kilmarnock 16, Maybole 16, and Girvan 28. The
country round is most delightfully picturesque, and
the rivers of Burnoch and Lougan water the pa-
rish. The great Scottish reformer, Johu Knox,
married his second wife at Ochiltree ; she was the
daughter of Lord Ochiltree, who at that period re-
sided at Oclviltree house, now the residence of Mrs^.
Johnston. About forty looms are employed in the
weavingof cotton goods for the Glasgow market;^
a cousiderable manufactory also of shearing hooks,
and a large dying work are established heie. The
church, likemost others in this part of the county,
is a plain l».rlding, and the only place of worship.
The parochial school is well attended. There are
no magistrates, and the village is almost proverbial,
for the honest charactier. of its inhabitants..
