MUIRKIRK.
Jl HIS parish, which is in the district of Kyle, is
generally hilly, and a great pait of its surface is co-
vered with heath, a small proportion only being fit
for tillage. But, though nature has not been boun-
tiful to the farmer, she has been kind to the miner,
for coals, iron, and limestone are abundant. The
procuring of these, and the various subsequent pro-
cesses, together with the British Tar Works, give
employment to a great number of hands. — The vil-
lage of Muirkirk is 27 miles E. of Ayr, 50 W. S. W.
of Edinburgii, 30 S. of Glasgow, 24 S. E. of Kilmai--
nock, 16 N, W. of Sanquhar, 15 N. by E. of New
Cumnock, 10 N. E. of Old Cumnock, and 10 E.by
S. of Sorn. The church is a handsome edifice.
There are three annual fairs, viz.: in July, August
and December.
POST OFFICE— Post Master, M,. Adam Mc Caul. The Mail arrives on Monday, Wednesday,
Friday, and Saturday, at nine in the morning, and is despatched at half past twelve the same days.
