hereditary bailies of Canick. Not far distant is the
Heart Locb. A fine specimen of tbose singular
nquare-built and lofty castles, so frequent in this
district, is now in the possession of the Earl of Cas-
sillis, who is the superior of Maybole. Ancient-
coins have been frequently found, and a large quan-
tity was recently discovered in fine preservation.
— Here are two remarkably fine springs of water,
know-n by the nara^e of St. Cuthbert*s, and Well
Trees. The collegiate church is now in ruins, and
the ground used as a cemetery. A church of the

The parochial school gives instruction annually to
about 170 boys and girls, who are taught all the
useful, and some of the polite branches of literature.
Thursday is the market day, and fairs are held on
the first Thursday in February, the last Tuesday in
April, the last Tuesday in July, and the last Tues-
day in October; all Old Style. The population of
the town in 1821 was 1495 males, and 1538 femsdes,
making a total of 3033.
