KIRKMICHAEL,
ia. Village and parish of Ayrshire, in the district
of Carrick, is 10 miles south east of Ayr, 44 south
by west of Glasgow, fourteen north east of Girvau,
twenty-two south of Kilmarnock, ten east of
Dalmellington, eight north by east of Dailly, four
from Straiten, and three and a half from Maybole.
The surface of this parish is hilly, towards the
soutli aud east mountainous and rocky, and only
a small proportion of the ground is under cultiva-
tion. 'Ihe Girvan runs through it, the Doon is
its boundary for several miles, and the Dyrock
water flows through the village, which derives its
uame from a church that formerly stood here.
dedicated to St. INIichael. The present church, '
which is a neat and commodious structure, was
built in 1787, on its site. In the yard is the tomb of
Gilbert Mc Adam, who was shot, in 1685, by the
laird of Colzean and Ballockinyle, for his adherence
to the covenanters. The village is pleasantly situ-
ated in a valley, and surrounded with trees.
Cross-Hill, in the same parish, is about two
miles from the former.
Fairs are held on the third Thursday iu February,
the third Thursday in April, the third Friday m
August, the second Thursday in September, and
the first Thursday in November.
