KILMAURS,
Ml Burgh of barouy, erected by James V. In 1527,
is in the shire of Ayr, and district of Cumiinghame,
two mile? from Kilmarnock, twenty from Glasgow,
thirteen from Ayr, six from Irvine, and three from
Stewartou. It is governed by two bailies, chosen
annually by a majority of the portioners of the
towii ; before Avhbm debts may be recovered by
regular sttnimon.s. There is an old pile of building
near to the church, seemingly of very ancient date,
but by whom it was erected, even tradition itself
is silent. In the cemetery of the Glencairu family,,
near the church, is a piece of beautiful ancient
sculpture, erected as a monument to the memory
of the chancellor William, the ninth earl. Kil-
maurs consists principally of one street, in th©
middle of which is a small town -house, with a
steeple and clock. The market, formerly held on
Friday, is now in disuse.
POST-OFFICE —Post Matter, Mr. Jamei Dickie. The mail arrives from Kilmarnock every
morning at ten, and at nine in the evening, and departs at seven in the morning and^ftve in the afternoouu^
