remains of a druidical altar are still to be seen iu

GALSTON,
LParish in Ayrshire, is watered by the river Ir-
vine. The soil is light and gravelly on the higher
lauds, while the lower grounds are loamy and very
rich. There is a considerable quantity of wood
here, some of which has grown to a pretty large
size. The lakes Aven and Bruntwood are in this
parish; the river Aven takes its rise from the form-
er, and, after traversing Lanaikshire, falls into the
Clyde near Hamilton. The old castles of Cessnock
anS Bar are surrounded with woods, both natural
and artificial. Patie's Mill claims the honour of
giving name to that beautiful song, " The Lass of
Patie's Mill." The town of Galston lies 22 miles
south by west of Glasgow, 16 north-east of Ayr, 14
north by west of Cumnock, 5 from Kilmarnock, and
3 from Newmilns. It is well situated on the road
from Edinburgh to Ayr, and from Glasgow to Dum-
fries. Over the river Irvine, which turns a flaxand
a woollen mill, is a fine stone bridge of three arches.
The principal employment of the labouring- class is
weaving. A court is held here, on the last Thurs-
day in each month, for the recovery of small debts,
and the administration of justice in affairs of minor
importance. In this small place are no less than five
benefit societies; a bible and missionary society,
three sabbath evening schools, in wliich near four
hundred children receive the benefits of instruction ;
and a subscription library. His Grace, the Duke of
Portland, is superior of the parish.
