eiiiplovnieiit, and, therefore, the means of support
to the labouring classes, but the health and morals
of every individual, in any way connected with it,
are studied in a manner the most laudable to the
proprietors. A suri^eon is regularly paid a salary
for attending sick members. Schools, with efficient
teachers, are provided, in wliich every branch of
ftioral and useful instruction is imparted to about
1()4 boys and 186 girls. There is also a sewing
school in which the girls are taught needle worlv,
and to make articles 'of dress for tlieir own use. A
salary of 6/. 10«. is paid to the mistress, and she is
provided with a house rent-free. A sabbath even-
ing school, attended by 112 males and 168 females,
is also accommodated v/ith the company's school
room, and furnished with fuel and light. ' To this a
library is attached, consisting of 333 volumes, wliich
are partly historical, but clifeily moral and religious
works. A further proof of the prosperity ol all
around these works is, that most of the workmen
have been able to purchase from the company tlie
houses in which the live. The feaars of the village
rent the chapel from Mr. Ale.xander, by whom it
was erected; while the rents of the sittings have
been quite sufficient to pay the clergyman and Mr.
Alexander. The chapel was erected about thirty
years ago, and contains 740 sittings. vSorn castle, an
ancient residence of the Loudon family, and the
small village of Soni, are about a mile and -a halt
distant, the birth place of Dougal Stevrart, esq.
late professor of moral philosophy in Edinburgh, is
not tar distant from Catrine. The vicinity abounds
with coal, limestone, and ironstone. Tlie jjopula-
tion is taken annually ; the last returns were 1071
males, and 1467 females, in 534 families. Asmuil
market is held every Saturday.
