CATRINE.,.
_N the parish of Sorn, Ayrshire, is seventy-two
miles west -south-west of Edinburgh, thirty-two
south of Glasgow, fourteen eiist by north of Ayr,
twelve south-west of Kilmarnock, five from Old
Cumnock, two from Mauchline, four from Ochil-
tree, twelve west of Muirkirk, and tv^'enty north-
west of Sanquhar. This place has lately risen from
insignificance iuto a considerable town. In 1787 its
site contained only a blacksmith's shop, and a meal
mill ; at present it possesess a population of 2538 per-
sons. The cause of this surprisingly raj)id increase ik
the erection of cotton works by the late Claud
Alexander esq., of Ballockmvle, who. having ac-
quired a large fortune in the "East Indies, purcha-
sed the land, on which this establishment is formed
being desirous of commencing some works, by
winch he might increase the value of his i)roperty.

But not understanding the cotton business himself,
he formed a partnership with the late David Dale,
merchant of Glasgow, with whom he carried on the
business until the 13di of April, 1801, when it was
entered upon by Messrs. James Fiulay and Co; since
which period the woiks have been very considerably
increased. Formerly the si)inning of cotton yarn
for sale was carried (»n to a limited extent ; but this
has been greatly extended : nearly the whole is
made into cloth by power looms, and about 60,000
yards are produced weekly, employing no less than 931
persons, viz : 237 males, and 694 females. Bleach
works have also been lately completed, forthe purpose
of bleaching and dressing the goods manufactu-
red at these works. It is imi)ossibleto speak in ade-
quate terms of the excellent manner,^ in which this
extensive concern is conducted; for it not only ^ives
