BALLANTRAE,
.3l Small sea port near the .south western extre-
mity of Ayrshire, is 105 miles south west of Edin-
burgh, 24 north north east of Portpatrick, 18 north
of Stranraer, 13 south by west of Girvan, 25 south
south west ofMayboIe, and 34 south by west of Ayr,
It is chiefly supported by its fishery of salmon, the
quality of which is much esteemed, and by the ma-
nufacture of coarse linen and plaids, in the weaving
of which about tifty looms are employed. The ap-
proach to the town from Stranraer is over the river
Stinchar, across v/hich is an ex-cellent stone bridge
of three well proportioned arches. On the right
near the bridge stand the ruins of Aird Stinchar
Castle, which formerly belonged to the Hamilton
family, and was inhabited by them about 150 years
ago. The ancient clock, belonging to the tower
now standing, is still to be seen in the town. The
Kirk, erected about five years ago, is a neat building
ornamented with stone, in the plain Gothic style.
The Rev. Thomas Hill has been lately appointed
minister. A Sunday school gives instruction to the
children of the poor. There are no resident magis-
trates, and the nearest court is held at Girvan, where
small debts are recoverable only by summons, BaU
lantrae is without eitlier fairs or market. The po-
pulation of the town and parish in 1821 was 1280.
PO&T OFFIGE — Post Master, and Clerk to the Kirk, John Miller. Mail from Edinburgh and
the north arrives every night at one, and departs every morning at three. Mail from the south, bringing
letters from all parts of Ireland, arrives and departs every morning at three.
