ARDROSSAN,
HtLEASANTLY situated on the western shore
lof the comity of Ayr, is a bathing place of ri-
■sing celebrity, about one mile from the sea port
4own of Saltcoats, 20 N. by W. of Avr, 74 |S. W,
of Edinbro', 30 S. W. of Glasgow, '25 S. S. W.
■of Paisley, 15 W. by N. of Kilmarnock, 12 S. of
Largs, 27 S. of Greenock, and 8 W. by N. of Ir-
vine. This place, though yet in a state of infancy,
bids fair soon to rival some of the longer established
watering places, as it has already met with more
general encouragement, and been visited by a
greater number of the fashionable world, than any
other of so short a standing. The conveniences for
lodging, the baths, its general superiority of accom-
modation, and the active j)atronage of the noble
family of Egliutou, render it superior, as a summer
retreat, to most other.'!. The Hotel is a fine large
stone building, which contains ten public rooms,
and 18 bed rooms, fitted up in a superior style of
elegance. The offices are also on an extensive scale,
and have stalls for 28 horses, besides stands for
carriages. The whole of this establishment was
erected and furnished by the late Lord Eglinton, at
an expense of not less than 10,000/, and it is con-
ducted by Mr. Rebert Young in a manner highly
satisfactory to its numerous visitants. There are also
two lodging houses of a superior description, which
were likewise erected by Lord Eglinton',"and by him
fitted up with elegant furniture ; besides these the
greater part of the inhabitants have comfortable
rooms, &c.to let for the season or a shorter period.
The harbour of Ardro^isan was commenced nearly
20 years ago under the auspices of the late Earl of
Eglinton ; he was a contributor of nearly 90,000/,
and became the sole proprietor both of it and the
town, as well as the extensive Barony of Ardrossan.
The tide harbour will contain from 50 to 60 ves-
sels. The dock, when finished, will cover an ex-
tent of seven Scots acres, and will then admit .50
vessels of from 3 to 600 tons burden. It was origin-
ally intended to form a communication between this
hai hour and Glasgow, by means of a canal, the
