TARBERT,
__ N the shire of Argyll, is a small fishing port and
village, known generally by the name of east Tar-
bcrt, and situated at tiie head of a fine sheltered
liarbour on Loch Fyne. It is 139 miles west of
Edinl)mgh, 37 nortli by east of Campbeltown, and
36 south south west of luveiaia^-. The town or
villasje may be said to form a semi-circle round the
harbour. It possesses two good inns, which afford
very comfortable accommodatioiis. In a command-
ing" situation, overlooUing the town and harbour,
are the remains of ancient castle and foitification ;
and immediately jjehind the village, in a southern
direction, is a small comfortable kirk. Tarbcrt
harbour is considered one of the safest in Scotland ;
the (prays are very commodious ; and for a seiies of
years it' has been a noted fishing station, particu-
larly for lie'rrings, which are mostly cured for the
Glasgow market.
Distant one mile south by west is the Tillage of
West Tarbert ; it is seated at the head of a loch
of the same name, which begins here, and in a
circuitious route winds through the mountains to
Ardpatrick, beyond which it empties itself into the
ocean. At the head of the loch, previous to
reaching West Tarbert village, the roads branch
one to the east, and the other to the west side of the
loch, on a line to Ardpatrick. Here Glenraloch the
seat of J. Campbell esq. of Audi, is passed. Hence
the road winds through a fine country, in which many
of the mountains are planted to their summits. At
intervals the waters of the loch below vary the
scene, by expanding in many parts to a mile in
lireadth. About the sixth mile on this road is
Dunmore, the residence of James Campbell esq ;
the house is hid by its plantations from the road ;
but from its site there is a pleasing view of the loch
and opposite shore. Four miles farther on is the
domain of Ardpatrick, oue of the residences of W.
