CLACHAN
I
S a small village pleasantly seated in a fine valley
on the. banks of a small stream, in the parish of
Kilcalmonell, in Argyllshire. It is distant 150 miles
west of Edinburgh, 26 north of Campbeltown, 11
soutl) of Tarbert, and 46 south west of Inverarav. —
Adjoinwig the town is the neat residence of Angus
Macalister, esq. called Balinakill. Here is also a
small cliurch, and in the vicinity is a vitrified fort
on a large scale, and another contiguous fortification
in ruin.s. Five miles to the east of Clachan is the
village of Whitehouse, in the vicinity of which is the
mansion of John Campbell, esq. called Stonefield.
Three miles from Clachan, and on the road to Tar-
bert, stands the handsome villa of Kintarbert, the
residencfe of the much respected Major General Ilo ■
) bert Campbell, commanding a fine view of West
Tarbert Loch and Dunmore House, which is the
seat of James Campbell, esq. and lies ou the o[>p(j-
site shore.

THE ISLAND OF ISLAY,
JlN Argyllshire, containing about fourteen thou-
sand inhabitants, lies between .55° 36' and 55° 58'
noi th hilifude, and between 6° and 6° 30' west lon-
gitude. It is in length from north to south about
thirty-one miles, and in breadth from east to west
about twenty-four miles, and distant from Edin-
burgh, by way of Tarbeit, 179 miles, 40 from Tar-
bent, and 76 from Inveraray. The shores are rugged,
hilt the face of the country is level and fertile, tole-
rably CKltivated, and capable of being much impro-
ved. With the exception of two very small estates
on the west side, v^z. — Sunderland, belonging to
Captain Walter Campbell, and Ballinaby, belonging
to Dugald Campbell, esq. the Island is the pro-
perty of Walter Frederick Campbell, esq. M. P. for
the county of Argyll, wlio is generally better known
by the name of Shawfield. It has several good har-
bours, 'fhe principal are Portaskaig, opposite to
the Island of Jura; Port EUinor in the south;
Portinhaven in the south- west, where there is an
elegant light-house erecting; and Bnwmore, nearly
inihe centre of the island. In Loch Indaal, oppo-
site Bowmore, during tlie stormy seasons, tber* are
generally from twenty, to thirty vessels at anchor,
and somethnes double that number. Islay House,
the seat of Shawfield Campbell, esq. is a large and
elegant building, situated at the head of Loch In-
daal, and commands a full view of the Loch, and of
the surrounding country. The principal village in
the Island is Bowmore, containing about 1,600 in-
habitants, situated on the east side of Loch Indaal,
and three jniles from Islay House. It has a good
pier with eight or nine feet of water at ordinary full
tides. There are some trading vessels belpnging to
the village, and a good deal of business is carried
on. The public buildings are the parish church, a

Rev. James Mac Intosh is minister ; and a building
not yet finished, intended for ajail and assembly-
room. There is also a large and excellent paiocliial
school, and house for the master, built and liberally
endowed by Shawfield. It statids on an eminence
at a short distance from the village, has a full view
ot the village and harbour, of Islay House, of the
country on both sides of Loch Indaal, of the liKhl-
house at Portinhaven, and of the two noted hills,
called the Paps of Jura. The prospect is terminated
on the north east by the Island of Jnra, and on the
south by Rathlin Island, and the coast of Ireland. —
Thomas Slatten Russel, A.M. is the present school
master. The branches of education taught in the
school are English, reading, grammar, elocution,
composition, history, Greek, Latin, French, writ-
ing, arithmetic, algebra, mensuration, mathematics,
navigation, and geography, with the use of tbe
globes. There are thirty elegant prizes annually
awarded to the scholars at the public examination,
given by the patroness Lady Ellinor Campbell, ^ho
also furnishes school-books to the poorer scholars.
A Justice of the Peace court is held twice a week at
Bridgend, about three miles from Bowmore, for the
recovery of small debts, and the trial of petty ofi'en-
ces. Considerable quantities of kelp are made in
the Island, and there are six distiheries, the si;irits
manufacttired at which are exported to Gl!V?gow. —
Bowmore has three annual fairs, viz. — on the first
Thursday after the 12th of August, for horses, &c. ;
the first Thursday after the 18th of October, for
cattle, &c. and the first Thursday after the 18ih of
February. There is also a large market, or fair, at
Portaskaig for cattle and horses, on the first Thurs-
day after the I2th of May.
