ASSOCIATION FOR ORGANISING
CHARITABLE BELIEF AND REPRESSING
MENDICITY.

The general objects of this association are to in-
vestigate thoroughly the cases of all poor persons in
the city who may be brought under its notice, with a
view to forwarding them to the proper quarter for
relief; to bring existing charities into co-operation
with one another and with the Poor-law authorities ;
to repress mendicity ; and by these agencies, and the
granting of loans in necessitous cases, to improve the
condition of the poor.
A labour yard has been opened for the purpose of
enabling tlie society to distinguish between the loafer
and the man willing to work, while at the same time
it serves as an efficient means of assisting able-bodied
men by providing them with temporary employment.
The Society recently opened an Industrial Shelter
at 60 Kyle street. Port Dundas, where food and
lodging will be provided to homeless able-bodied men,
on condition that they do a certain amount of work.
The Society has initiated a scheme for providing
healthy, necessitous children with boots and clothing
during the winter months, under the safeguard of the
police and the co-operation of the pawnbrokers.
Contributions towards the funds of the Society are
urgently required, and should be sent to the Treasurer
at 115 Bath Street.
The society also serves as a central agency for the
purpose of receiving the contributions of the public
towards bona fide charitable institutions. These
contributions may be sent to the society monthly,
quarterly, half-yearly or yearly, or at whatever time
it may be most convenient.
In connection with this society a ladies' auxiliary
has been established for the purpose of aiding the
society by personal visitation of the poor, and also by
providing temporary employment in the way of sew-
ing for poor women, who have been proved to be

GLASGOW ELDERS' WIVES' AND DAUGH-

HOME FOR GIRLS,
13 Canning Place, Stirling Road.
This association sent out its thirty-fourth report in
December last. Its chief work is to train orphan
and destitute girls as domestic servants in the Home.
It is undenominational in its benefits, and suitable
applications are at once entertained. Income from
subscriptions and other sources, about £450. Secre-

CITY OF GLASGOW NATIVE BENEVOLENT
ASSOCIATION.
Its object is to assist natives, and widows and I
families of natives, of the city of Glasgow, who have
been in good circumstances, but from reverses of
fortune, or otherwise, are in need of assistance. A
payment of £5 5s., either in one sum at entry or by five
successive yearly instalments of £1 Is., constitutes

MISSION COAST HOME, SALTCOATS.
The object of this Home is to aflbrd a gratuitous

Coast Home, Saltcoats.

BLACK'S BEQUEST FOR DOMESTIC
SERVANTS.
Founded by Dr. -James Black, sometime sm'geon m
Jamaica, afterwards residing in Glasgow, and who
died in 1834. The funds are to be given to faithful
domestic servants settled in Glasgow or neighbour-
hood, who have been ten years or upwards in one
situation. Preference is given to applicants above 60
years of age. Amount, £2 10s. per annum. There are
about 200 pensioners. Factors, Mitchells, Johnston,
& Co., 160 West George Street.
GLASGOW HUMANE SOCIETY.
Office-bearers — President (ex officio), the Lord

The society was instituted in 1790 for the purpose
of giving encouragement to efi'orts for rescuing persons
from drowning on the Clyde. An officer is kept per-
manently stationed at the society's house in the Green,
provided with proper apparatus for saving life and
resuscitation. The society gives rewards in money,
and occasionally awards their honorary certificate to
persons who have particularly distinguished themselves
by their efforts in saving human life.
