The Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, incorporated
by royal charter in 1793, includes at present upwards
of 1000 members, representing the principal merchants,
maniifacturers, and shippers in the city and neigh-
bourhood, and is recognized as the principal medium
of communication with the Government and Legisla-
ture on all commercial matters. The executive power
is lodged in a board of thirty-six directors, chosen at
the annual general meetings. The board meets for
the discussion of mercantile questions once a month,
or more frequently if found necessary.

The objects of the Association are to inform the
public by lectures, literature, &c., in regard to the
injui-ious effects of Co-operative and Civil Service
Stores on the trade of the country, and to establish
branch Associations throughout Scotland; to bring
before the Legislature the unjust burden traders have
to bear in comparison with these Stores in reference
to income tax ; to protect the interests of its members
in connection with unequal taxation, local and im-
perial — procuring direct representation of traders on
ooal boards, municipal councils, and in parliament —
government and otber inspectors, against harassing
interference and undue restrictions, &c, ; and parlia-
mentary Acts affecting traders, and in connection
therewith to provide free legal advice to members and
legal services on special terms fixed by the board of
management.
