CRATHIE,
BEAEMAE, BALMOEAL, AND CASTLETOWN.
CEATHIE, a parish 51 miles distant from
Aberdeen, situated among tlie Grampian mountains,
in the centre of the district of Marr, is an extensive
tract of mountainous country, formerly called the
Forest of Marr, situated at a considerable elevation
above the level of the sea. Ballater, the terminus of
the Deeside section of the Great Nortli of Scotland
Eailway, the nearest railway station to the parish, is
about nine miles from the small village and post
office of Crathie. ,
BEAEMAR, formerly a separate parish, biit now-
incorporated with that of Crathie, is situated about
60 miles from Aberdeen. In this district a con-
siderable portion of tlie ancient forest remains un-
cleared, and is largely stocked with deer. Owing to
its liealthy and beautiful situation, Balmoral Castle in
this parish, was selected by Her Majesty the Queen
and the late lamented Prince Consort, as a place of
residence and retirement. Her Majesty spends a
considerable portion of each year in this her favourite
higliland home, to the great dehght of the inhabi-
tants, to whom Her Majesty has become endeared
by many acts of kind condescension and interest she
takes in their welfare. A very large number of
visitors are attracted during the summer season to
this wild and romantic neighbourhood, especially
during the time of Her Majesty's residence at the
Castle. A short distance from Bahnoral is Abergeldie
Castle, the seat of H.E.H. the Prince of Wales, and
several noblemen and gentlemen have seats or
shooting boxes in the parisli.
CASTLETOWN (Braemar) is a village on the
military-road from Blairgowrie to Fort George. The
river Cluny passes through and divides the village,
one side of tlie river being named Avichendyrne. At
Lochnagar in this parish is Mr. John Begg's cele-
brated distillery of pure Highland whisky. The
Lochnagar whisky, in addition to being under the
special patronage of royalty, is highly esteemed by
connoisseurs. Lochnagarmountain rises to the height
of 3,789 feet above the level of the sea. The highest
mountain in the parish is Ben Muich Dhui, 4,295 feet
elevation. The lakes, or Lochs Callader and
Brotachan in this neighbourhood, are fairly stocked
with trout, salmon, and eels.
